Learn How to Clean Granite Countertops

Perhaps I'm asking for to much, but if I spend a couple thousand $$$ for some granite countertops in my kitchen, I would like them to be self-cleaning. (-;

Since I don't have all the time in the world to clean, before purchasing any household item (every appliance, knick knack and countertop), they are assessed for their "cleaning ease".

In other words, what do I need to do to clean this and how much time will it take?

However, when it comes to granite countertops, all that goes out the window simply because I like how they look - soooo beautiful!

Beyond beauty, the unofficial statement is that it increases the value of your home and you get to enjoy their easy maintenance and durability.

With this commitment made, I embarked on the journey to learn how to clean granite countertops. I was pleasantly surprised at the consensus that they were easy to clean and maintain.

Not surprising - they are not self cleaning.

Anyway, while I resign my dream of self-cleaning granite countertops and a self cleaning house for that matter - let me share my one tip of how to clean granite countertops...

What you can do is add a quarter cup of isopropyl rubbing alcohol into a quart-size spray bottle - add a couple of drops of liquid dishwashing detergent and then fill this to the top with water.

This is not only the best granite countertop cleaner but also the most inexpensive, costing only a few cents to make.

Now that's not all...

I scoured the net for some tips and came up with the following strategy...

Prevention Is Better Than Cure!

First of all, prevention is better than cure. With granite countertops, the first line of defense is to make sure to reseal countertops every year. Doing this slows the process of your granite countertop from absorbing any liquids left on it.

Now that you know what to do, here's what not to do...

Even though granite countertops are...

• heat resistant,


• scratch resistant,


• and immune to household acids like citrus fruits and vinegar.

DO NOT...

• use harsh chemicals on granite or any stone product, or cleaners containing acidic ingredients such as vinegar which could cause deep etches and scratching.


• leave any acidic foods such as sodas, vinegar or lemon juice on your counter for very long, as it is possible for them to etch the top.


• let spills set up residence on your granite countertops, always clean up any spills immediately.


• use your granite countertop as a cutting board. Polished granite countertops are a little more delicate.


• drag appliances, pans or pots across the countertop.

With a little care and the knowledge of how to clean granite countertops properly, your granite will add warmth, color and beauty to your kitchen forever.
